About Mark

Mark Simmons has been in professional psychotherapy practice since 1988. Mark is a graduate of the Worden School of Social Service at Our Lady of the Lake University, earning his MSW in 1988. He achieved his BA in Psychology at Trinity University in 1982. He is licensed as a Clinical Social Worker, and as a Marriage and Family Therapist. He has been in practice as a psychotherapist for over 20 years, and he efficiently puts this experience toward creating the change you want in your life and with the people you love.

Mark has built his extensive knowledge and experience with mental health, addiction and family issues by working in a wide variety of settings, all in San Antonio, Texas:

  • 1984-1989, Drug Abuse Counselor at Drug Dependence Associates
  • 1989-1990, Clinician on Adult Psychiatry Unit, Charter Real Hospital
  • 1990-1992, Associate Director and Clinician, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Units, Charter Real Hospital
  • 1994, Clinician on Geriatric Psychiatry Unit, Nix Hospital (Downtown San Antonio)
  • 1991-1997, Private practice psychotherapist at the Depression Treatment Clinic of San Antonio, working under psychiatrists Saul Rosenthal MD, and then Gary Penny MD
  • 1992-2012, Independent private practice, and case manager in the Post Adoption program at Family Counseling Services, two days per week, serving families who have adopted abused and neglected children through the state of Texas
  • 1997-present, Independent private practice

Mark believes that physical activity is an important component to feeling good, and managing stress.
He emphasizes this in therapy, and also practices what he preaches by being an avid cyclist.

Mark is an accomplished speaker, having lead workshops for parents and professionals on the topics of Stress Management, Parenting and Behavior Management, Anger Control, Depression, and Relaxation Training.

Mark believes that physical activity is an important component to feeling good, and managing stress. He works hard to practice what he preaches by being very involved in the fitness field and being an avid cyclist.

Mark has been married since 1984, and both personally and professionally believes in the benefits of deep, long term relationships. He has three grown children, two daughters and a son, and greatly enjoys continuing to be involved in their lives.

Mark also believes that an important piece to having a full, enjoyable life, is to have a healthy sense of humor, and tries to include that in the therapeutic process.
